The art of writing

A Different kind of

writing workshop

Most such workshops deal with the craft of writing, teaching specific methods for writing that involve designing elaborate character profiles, outlining, and specific story structure concepts.

That’s not at all what this workshop is about.

So what makes this workshop different?

It’s about letting the story flow from within and making it a living thing born of your vision and imagination.  It’s not about The Rules, or how things should be done.  This isn’t about the mechanics of writing.

It’s all about the characters.

Any good story evolves from the characters.  If you populate your stories with memorable, sympathetic people, you’ll be sure to leave an impression on your readers they’ll not soon forget.

Learn how to turn a character concept into a living, breathing piece of art, how to make your fiction come alive.

Sounds simple.  And maybe it is.  But more than anything in any genre of literature, everything begins and ends with the protagonist(s) of any given story.  Whole franchises have been built on the strength of a single character.  Jason Bourne, Jack Reacher, Alex Cross, Miles Vorkosigan, Honor Harrington, Anita Blake, Eve Dallas, Lestat, Conan... yes, the list goes on.

Characters make the story, bring a world of words to virtual life in the hearts and minds of the reader.

So what makes a character memorable and unique, enough perhaps to carry a franchise all by him or her self?

This is what this workshop is set up to explore.

So come along, bring your notebook or laptop, and let's get to it.  Maybe the next character to fire up the public imagination will be yours.

We'll also delve into the ensemble cast, and working with character interaction and dialogue to set scene by way of some drama exercises from my school days.

You will walk out of this workshop with a sense of the character(s) you have it in you to build.
